‘Business as usual’ for Spring Garden stores during streetscaping project

By Chris Halef

A streetscaping project on one of HRM's busiest streets is officially underway.

On Monday, the municipality began closing off a portion between Queen and South Park Streets as work gets underway to revitalize that portion of Spring Garden Road.

The project includes 29 new trees with lighting, nearly 700 new perennials and shrubs, 30 bike racks in the area, new furniture including benches and 47 per cent wider sidewalks.

Sue Uteck, executive director for the Spring Garden Area Business Association, told NEWS 95.7 fill-in host Todd Veinotte this is important for our city's tourism.

“If you look at the tourism from the waterfront up to the public gardens, that's where the tourists are going to come,” she said. “This is the heart of Halifax.”

Uteck wished the municipality had been able to start the project last year, but added HRM couldn't for a number of reasons.

She said there's no good time for a large construction project like this, but with no cruise ships coming in this year and fewer visitors overall, now is the ideal time to get it started.

Uteck said a $60,000 campaign is being launched to ensure people know that, even with the project underway, Spring Garden Road is open for business.

Work on the project is expected to continue through to November.
