Businesses making the best of Spring Garden Rd. construction

By Mark Hodgins

It's been far from business as usual on Spring Garden Rd. over the last several months.

A streetscaping project that began in June has torn up the iconic Halifax street, blocking it off the vehicle traffic for most of the summer. The construction is facing delays and is now expected to continue beyond the original end date scheduled for Nov. 30.

“We're definitely going through to December,” suggested Sue Uteck, head of the Spring Garden Area Business Association. “The crews start working now at 4 a.m., so they're really making every effort. Basically the delays are unknowns under the street that have been found, and the COVID supply chain is impacting delivery of material.”

Despite the less-than-ideal situation for local businesses, Uteck said many are reporting business hasn't been too bad.

“We ran a positive campaign called “We're Digging Spring Garden”, we've done some fun things out on the street, and I just think it's the vibe of Spring Garden itself,” Uteck offered. “People are like, 'yeah it's construction, it's inconvenient, but we're still coming'.”

While it's still not clear how long the construction will last, Uteck said businesses are making the best of it.

“I have to say kudos to them, they have stayed so positive throughout this.”
