CBSA launches new state-of-the-art inflatable boat

The Canadian Border Services Agency has unveiled its new tool for improving operational responses.

M/V Bob Annand is a Rigid-Hulled Inflatable Boat (RHIB) and will be used all over Atlantic Canada.

CBSA's director general for the Atlantic region, Chris Lorenz, said it will increase the efficiency and flexibility of officers as they board and search vessels.

“Our boat can carry a crew of 10 officers and will be available for use around our region in any season,” he said at an event Wednesday.

“CBSA will have the capability to transport our officers directly to and from vessels that anchor and the boat will also serve as a remotely operated vehicle platform.”

He added many travellers and goods enter the country through waterways and the agency needs the best tools available to keep Canadians safe.

It's named after former border services officer Bob Annand, who died in 2016.

“His work with the CBSA National Targeting Centre, developing methods used to intercept vessels, was very influential in everyday work and will go down in history with the CBSA,” Lorenz said.

Bob's brother Bruce said he'd would be proud and humbled by the gesture.

“Thank you for this enduring recognition for Bob, and thank you for a memory that his granddaughter, Peyton, can have for her entire life.”
