Disability advocate ‘hurt’ by province’s decision to appeal ruling

An advocate is calling on the Houston government to drop a planned appeal of a ruling finding systemic discrimination against people with disabilities.

The province announced the move last week, after the premier had previously said he heard the message “loud and clear”.

Now, a disability rights advocate is calling on Tim Houston's progressive conservatives to do the “right thing”.

Vicky Levack, spokeswoman for the Disability Rights Coalition, tells CityNews she was shocked by the decision.

“I was hurt, I was confused because they said they weren't going to do that,” said Levack. “If there's one thing I don't like it is liars, and that's what the premier has done, he lied when he said he wouldn't do that.

“I thought the fight was over and we could finally move on to solutions, but it's not.”

Community services minister Karla MacFarlane said the decision to appeal was in the hope that the country's top court could answer questions raised by the decision.

Levack, who has cerebral palsy, is set to meet with the premier this week to discuss the case.
