Downtown Dartmouth to host ‘biggest street party of the year’ this Sunday

By Matt Brand

It's billed as the biggest street party of the year, and it's happening this Sunday in downtown Dartmouth.

This is the seventh year for Switch Dartmouth, when a combined 2 km of Portland Street and Prince Albert Road are closed down to cars, and open to people of all ages. Organizers say it's a chance to see what cities can be when you plan for people instead of cars.

The day will feature live music, shopping, and a variety of activities, like bouncy castles for the kids.

Tim Rissesco is the executive director of the Downtown Dartmouth Business Commission, and he tells NEWS 95.7, there are too many activities to list.

“We have about 75 different community groups coming to do demonstrations and activities, everything from St. George's Tennis Club, to the local yoga studio, so there'll be something for everybody along the route,” says Rissesco.

He continues, saying it's a great opportunity for Dartmouth to showcase its great restaurants, shops, and community.

“We get 8,000 people in downtown Dartmouth on a Sunday afternoon when normally you may have two or three hundred people walk up the street,” says Rissesco. “So it pays off great dividends.”

Switch Dartmouth runs from noon until 4, and it coincides with the start of Halifax Bike Week from June 1 to 9.
