UPDATE: Winter storm warning now in effect for Halifax area

Looks like we're in for some messy winter weather to kick off the first week of March.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the entire province with back-to-back storms on the way.

The first low pressure system is expected to pass south of Nova Scotia on Sunday bringing snow to western areas late Saturday, spreading to the east overnight into Sunday.

Meteorologist Ian Hubbard said, as of early Friday afternoon, he expects snow to start falling in the Halifax area either late in the afternoon or early evening Saturday.

“That's going to persist right through until Sunday morning sometime … with amounts probably in the 15 to 20 cm range for Saturday evening.”

He expects snowfall warnings to be issued.

We should get a bit of a break Sunday before snow starts again Monday morning.

“Anywhere from 7 to 10 a.m. and that's going to continue on until the afternoon,” Hubbard explained. “This storm will see a changeover to some freezing precipitation, so we'll probably see some ice pellets and maybe a little freezing rain with that during the day.”

“Most likely it's going to be warming up just a little bit and changing over to rain later on in the day Monday before all this precipitation wraps up.”

Environment Canada says it's still too early to say how much snow and rain we'll get Monday, “however, conditions could be significant enough to disrupt transportation.”
