Environment Canada issues storm surge warning for Halifax area, Sunday

By Katie Hartai

Environment Canada has issued a storm surge warning for the Halifax area saying higher than normal water levels with large waves are expected near the coast.

Forecasters say an intense low pressure system southeast of Nova Scotia will continue to bring large waves and pounding surf from the northeast impacting parts of the Atlantic coast Sunday, from Halifax to Shelburne counties.

Environment Canada says during high tide Sunday morning and night, waves and surf will combine with higher than normal water levels and will potentially cause some coastal flooding and possible infrastructure damage in vulnerable areas.

They say high waves combined with the surge may cause damage along the coast and coastal erosion is possible.

Storm surge warnings are issued when water levels pose a threat to coastal regions.

Environment Canada suggests the public closely monitors forecasts throughout the day.
