By CityNews Halifax Staff

The coldest days of the year are coming for the Halifax area.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement to advise of the frigid temperatures that are expected Friday into Saturday.

The advisory cover the Halifax Metro and Halifax County West regions and says that an arctic air mass will combine with strong northwest winds to give bitterly cold windchill values, beginning Friday.

Windchill values of minus 35 to minus 40 are expected to develop Friday night and will persist into Saturday morning before beginning to moderate Saturday afternoon as winds subside.

Temperatures are forecasted to climb back up above zero on Sunday.
