Environmental groups to unite at Province House for protest

By Steve Gow

Environmental groups will be converging at the Nova Scotia Legislature in Halifax on July 26 to protest the lack of action taken to protect the province’s ecosystems and democracy.

Bill Zebedee, president of Protect Our Southdale Wetland Society, says a coalition of environmental groups began planning The Rally in Support of the Environment back in May with participants ranging across Nova Scotia from Sydney to Yarmouth.

“They are facing the same issues we are seeing at Eisner Cove Wetland,” says Zebedee in a press release about the Dartmouth wetland at risk of proposed residential development. “The environment and our collective voices are being ignored.”

In the release, Zebedee adds that Protect Eisner Cove Wetland has watched their democratic rights taken from them and handed over to five unelected individuals on the Housing Task Force.  He notes that they are the only individuals accountable to Nova Scotia Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, John Lohr.

Other groups involved in the protest include PLAN Fall River Society, Protect Hartlen Point, Development Options Halifax and Friends’ of Halifax Commons.

The Rally in Support of the Environment gathering will take place from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Nova Scotia Legislature on Granville Street.
