UPDATE: Larry Uteck Blvd. has reopened to traffic.

Fire has shut down a section of Larry Uteck Blvd. Friday morning.

Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency crews are battling the blaze, which is on the roof of a tall building under construction.

The thick, black, billowing smoke was visible throughout much of the metro area.

Deputy chief Dave Meldrum said the call came in at around 9:30 a.m.

“Firefighters arrived promptly and did indeed encounter a significant amount of smoke on the roof,” he said. “This is a multi-storey highrise building, so it's quite large.”

“Firefighters have made their way to the roof where they report roofing materials on fire.”

No injuries have been reported at this time.

As of just before 10 a.m., the road is closed off from the intersection of Starboard Dr. to Southgate Dr., which has caused some Halifax Transit routes to be detoured.

Meldrum suspects the closure to last at least a couple of hours.

Drivers are being asked to use alternative routes.
