Early Wednesday evening, Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency were called to the Maritime Centre at the corner of Barrington Street and Salter Street after reports of a significant volume of smoke in the building.
Deputy Chief Dave Meldrum telling NEWS 95.7 this is “a very large, multi storey building,” and they moved a lot of firefighters there very quickly. He adds the crews did find a fire in one of the lower levels that is currently under construction.
He says the fire was quickly contained, and firefighters from Two Station on University Avenue got in there very quickly to knock it down. Meldrum says they remained on scene for two to three hours to clear smoke from the building.
Meldrum reports no injuries, and there's no indication at this time the fire was suspicious. He says other than “the large volume of smoke, it was quickly dealt with.”
Meldrum says a challenge from the incident was the size of the Maritime Centre, as finding a fire in a building that big can present some difficulties. He also thanked their partners with Halifax Regional Police for helping keep people safe, as the street was blocked off for a period of time while crews dealt with the fire, and smoke.
