Halifax restaurant The Bicycle Thief trying to claim the throne of Canada’s best restroom

By Matt Brand

Call it a game of thrones.

The finalists have been announced for the 2020 Canada’s Best Restroom contest, and Halifax restaurant The Bicycle Thief was named as one of them.

The description of The Bicycle Thief’s restroom calls is modern and stylish, noting their “well-stocked stalls with artwork and scented candles” and, not to mention, fresh flowers, daily.

“Bathrooms, of course, are part of your dining experience and we want to make sure we express our attention to that area as well,” says Hakan Uluer, Owner of The Bicycle Thief.

The other finalists are the Hawthorn Dining Room in Calgary, Leña Restaurante in Toronto, Westview RV Park – Wetaskiwin, and Yorkdale Shopping Centre – Toronto.

With people able to vote for the winner, Uluer tells The Sheldon MacLeod Show, given the support they’ve received from the community, this contest could be in the can.

“We posted it on our webpage, we got about 4 or 5 thousand people putting their likes and comments,” he says.

The contest is put on by Cintas with the winner taking home a restroom cleaning service and $2,500 in facility services.

But according to Uluer, they’re really playing for bragging rights.

I do have an amazing team, they do go to our washrooms everyday at four o’clock in the morning, they clean everything from floor to ceiling, and especially with the pandemic, we try to take extreme measures to keep up with the cleanliness.
