Hiker rescued ‘deep’ in wilderness trail outside Halifax

As it was getting dark on Saturday, September 28, one hiker remained deep in the woods on the Bluff Wilderness Trail.
The trail, just outside Halifax is described as a rugged, challenging 4-loop wilderness trail over 30 kms, for experienced hikers only. Each loop is estimated to take three to four hours to complete.
As daylight ran out, the hiker called 911 for help getting back to the trail head in Timberlea.
RCMP got in touch with Halifax Search and Rescue (HSAR) at 8:15 p.m., according to a news release.
Police and HSAR members determined the approximate location of the hiker over the phone, and then launched a rescue boat on Big Hubley Lake.
More search and rescue personnel began to head out at the Bluff Trail head, as well as on both sides of nearby Cranberry Lake, in search of the hiker.
Just after 11:00 p.m., HSAR located the hiker approximately 12 kilometres from the trail head.
Search and Rescue say the hiker was assessed at the scene for injuries by Wilderness Medical First Responders, and escorted back to the boat and out of the woods safely.
Everyone was out of the woods by 12:30 a.m. Sunday morning.
