Keep safety in mind while cheering on Canada: police

By Meghan Groff

Halifax Regional Police are asking Haligonians to keep safety in mind as they cheer on Canada in the gold medal game of the World Juniors tournament Thursday night.

Large crowds are expected to descend upon the downtown core.

Police say traffic delays are likely and finding parking might be difficult.

They recommend taking public transportation if possible.

And not everyone heading downtown will have a ticket to get into the Scotiabank Centre.

Many bars and restaurants will be packed with fans.

“Under no circumstances should you drive impaired,” said HRP in a social media post. “Call a cab, arrange a designated driver or take public transit. Take every step you can to get to your destination safe.”

The Woodside Ferry will be running later than usual tonight.

Normally, the last ferry to Woodside leaves Halifax just before 9 p.m. on weekdays, but Halifax Regional Municipality says tonight ferries will leave Halifax every 30 minutes between 9:07 p.m. to 11:07 p.m.

The Alderney Ferry has service every 15 minutes on weekdays. The final ferry of the night is scheduled to leave Halifax for Alderney Landing at 11:45 p.m.

You can head to Rogers Square to watch the game. An outdoor viewing area has been set up there.

And Fan Fest is still going on at the Halifax Convention Centre with family-friendly fun. The Town Heroes are scheduled to play at 6:15 p.m.

If you're bringing the kids, police say it's a good idea to pre-arrange a meeting spot in case you get separated.

Canada will face Czechia in the final game, the only team to beat the Canadians at this year's tournament.

Halifax Mooseheads' defenceman David Moravec scored a goal for the Czechs in that 5-2 Boxing Day win. According to the Halifax Mooseheads, he will become the 10th Mooseheads player to earn a medal at the World Juniors.

The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
