Kinsman Beach closed due to high bacteria levels

There will be no swimming at Kinsman Beach until further notice.

Halifax Regional Municipality says recent tests at the Lower Sackville swimming spot indicate bacteria levels have exceeded Health Canada guidelines.

“High bacteria levels can be caused by a number of factors, including weather conditions and waterfowl,” they said in a news release.

The water quality at all supervised and four unsupervised beaches in HRM is regularly tested in the summer months.

As of Wednesday morning, Kinap, Black Rock, Dingle and Government Wharf beaches also remain closed due to high bacteria levels.

In addition, a risk advisory for Lake Banook, including Birch Cove Beach, and Lake Micmac remains in effect due to the presence of algae blooms.

HRM is asking the public to avoid swimming, wading or allowing pets in the affected areas until they can confirm it's safe.

Residents can check the status of their favourite municipal beach online.
