Power has been knocked out to a large portion of the peninsula and part of the Fairmount neighbourhood.

According to Nova Scotia Power's outage map, nearly 20,000 customers have no electricity.

The website blames “wildlife interference” and the utility took to Twitter to explain a bird contacted electrified equipment at the Kempt Rd. substation.

“Crews are on site and are working to restore power as soon as possible,” it said on social media.

The lights went out just before 11 a.m.

As of 11:55 a.m., the restoration time is listed as 1 p.m.

Dalhousie University says the outage is impacting some parts of its campus.

Those who encounter traffic lights that aren't working are required to treat the intersection as an all-way stop.
