Macdonald Bridge closure scheduled this weekend

By Meghan Groff

There's a closure scheduled this weekend for the Macdonald Bridge.

Halifax Harbour Bridges (HHB) says the cross-harbour span will shut down to vehicles at 7 p.m. on Friday, November 12. It's not expected to reopen until 5:30 a.m. Monday, November 15.

Crews will be doing concrete work on the Dartmouth side of the bridge.

“The project effort requires jacking up a section of bridge away from the supporting pier that is being refurbished,” HHB says.

“Construction work will be carried out around the clock to complete the work over the weekend and ensure minimal disruption to traffic.”

The sidewalk and bike lanes will remain open this weekend.

However, there will be overnight closures of the bikeway next week.

It will be shut down between 7 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. from Monday, November 15 to Thursday, November 18 for the removal of temporary fencing and the re-installation of the railings.

“The project requires closing a lane and using a crane to move the railing into place. With safety as a priority for everyone involved, we have determine this cannot take place during the day,” said HHB General Manager and CEO Steve Snider.

“We understand this will be an inconvenience for cyclists and our neighbours. We hope they understand this closure is required to ensure the safe and efficient use of the bridge.”

Cyclists will still be able to walk their bikes across the bridge using the sidewalk.
