Maritime Bus owner anticipating rebound in 2022

New funding will help keep an inter-provincial bus service on the road after major losses during the pandemic.

Mike Cassidy is owner of Maritime Bus and tells CityNews, the $900,000 from the Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI governments, announced last week, will help cover some of the losses and help prepare the company for a rebound in tourism.

“We had a slow start to 2022,” said Cassidy. “Omicron slowed us up completely. It just killed January to June business but the forecast on the books right now for July through to December looks almost as strong as 2019.”

Cassidy says the pandemic has been very difficult on passenger service companies like his.

He says he credits the three governments for coming together to find a solution for a company that connected rural communities outside of municipalities but didn't qualify for federal funding.

“They're coming together, coming up with a solution and they honoured the request to try to help us,” Cassidy offered. “Very grateful.”
