Several Halifax-area schools closing due to power outages (update)

The Halifax Regional Centre for Education is sending students at several schools home early due to ongoing power outages.

The following schools have started dismissing students for the day:

  • Astral Drive Elementary
  • Astral Drive Junior High
  • Auburn Drive High
  • Bel Ayr Elementary
  • Bell Park Academic Centre
  • Caldwell Road Elementary
  • Colby Village Elementary
  • Cole Harbour District High
  • Colonel John Stuart Elementary
  • Eastern Passage Education Centre
  • Graham Creighton Junior High
  • Joseph Giles Elementary
  • Portland Estates Elementary
  • Robert Kemp Turner Elementary
  • Sir Robert Borden Junior High

As of 9:30 a.m. Nova Scotia Power is reporting large power outages impacting several communities from Dartmouth to Eastern Passage to North Preston.

There's also an outage in the Otter Lake area.

Overall, more than 20,000 customers are without power.

The utility says “transmission interruption” is responsible for two of the larger outages.

The estimated restoration time is listed as 11 a.m.
