New French-language school announced for HRM

Newbridge Academy, a former private school in Dartmouth, will be converted into a new French-language high school.

The province announced on Monday morning that they will invest $28.5 million to purchase and renovate the school, which will open to students in September 2020.

The Conseil scolaire acadian provincial (CSAP) says the additional school will help reduce enrolment pressure at other French schools in HRM.

Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development Zach Churchill says the school will help meet growing demand for French education.

“The Acadian and French-speaking community in our province is growing,” said Churchill. “This new school will help to meet the demand for French first-language education in the region and give students and families a modern learning environment.”

The newly acquired school, located on John Savage Ave., will be able to hold about 900 students. The total number of students in the CSAP system is about 6,100.

Superintendent of CSAP Michel Comeau says the board is pleased with the announcement.

“Not only will this school allow us to provide our students with a modern learning facility, it will also address space pressures in schools in the Halifax Regional Municipality,” Comeau is quoted as saying in a press release.

The Department of Education also plans to announce two other CSAP school in the future, one in the Wedgeport area and one in the Clare area. This is part of the five-year School Capital Plan, announced in 2018.

There are a total of seven CSAP schools in the Halifax region and 21 across Nova Scotia.
