New modular units aim to help people experiencing homelessness in Halifax

By CityNews Halifax Staff

New modular trailers set up outside Centennial Pool will soon house people experiencing homelessness.

The Halifax Regional Municipality has completed the work in the parking lot of the Cogswell Street recreation centre but staff is still being recruited to run the operation.

Kat Stein from the Out of the Cold Community Association, the organization managing the unit's support services, tells CityNews, the 38 single-occupancy rooms still require a variety of workers.

“We introduced positions such as case managers so now every single resident has a case manager,” says the organization's program manager. “We have permanent overnight staff as well as weekend staff.”

Stein adds there are a range of support staff positions yet to be hired.

She notes the organization's staff numbers jumped from about 25 to upwards of 70 since the project began eight months ago.

The move-in date is yet to be set until staff are trained, but services will  include mental health and addictions support and life-stability programming.
