New walking tour eliminates the need for a selfie stick

Anybody who has travelled knows the challenge of capturing the perfect Facebook profile picture in front of an amazing attraction.

Those who book themselves on a new walking tour of Halifax don't have to worry about mastering the group selfie because the tour guides also take care of the photography.

David Turner was inspired to launch Photobook Walking Tours after seeing other tourists have to ask strangers to take their pictures while he was on vacation.

“You just never know if someone is going to run off with your phone or camera,” he explained. “Plus you can never really count on the caliber of picture that you're asking a stranger to take for you.”

The approximately three hour walking route stops at several locations in Halifax, starting with Pier 21.

“There's probably about 35 different points of interest that we discuss on the tour, and then 15 of those … we actually take a picture with something significant in the background.”

That includes Georges Island, the Samuel Cunard statue outside of the Halifax Seaport Market and CSS Acadia.

Turner enlisted a historian to help come up with the narrative.

“The biggest theme in the tour touches on immigration and history. The fact that newcomers have really built this country as well as Halifax,” he said in an interview with NEWS 95.7. “And also the strategic and military importance of Halifax over the last 250 years.”

In addition to visitors to the city, Turner said the tour would be great for newcomers — including military families and university students — and locals.

“There's a lot you're going to learn. It's informative and fun, plus you give the responsibility of taking the pictures to someone else.”

Those who take the tour will get 15 photos of their group, plus an additional 25 pre-selected pictures of Halifax.

They will be sent in a digital format, which can be posted on social media. They'll also get a front and back cover for those who want to print off the pictures and make a keepsake photo book.
