Now that December has arrived, social calendars will be filled with office parties, family gatherings and nights out with friends.
Law enforcement agencies across Nova Scotia are also kicking off Operation Christmas, to reduce impaired driving in the province.
Cpl. Dal Hutchinson with the Halifax District RCMP told NEWS 95.7's The Rick Howe Show they want everyone to enjoy the holidays, but to also keep safety in mind if they're planning on having a few drinks.
“If you go out, and you are under the influence, do not get behind the wheel, because that moment of making a bad choice can have an impact on you and others that will last the rest of your life.”
He said there are plenty of other ways to get home, including having a designated driver or calling a cab.
“You're going to see an increased presence and visibility of police throughout the entire province, you're going to see increased checkpoints.”
Police are also encouraging anyone who sees a driver who appears to be impaired to call 911.
It's illegal to drive with a blood-alcohol level above .08, anyone between .05 to .08 can lose their licence for a week or more.
Impaired driving is a leading cause of preventable death and serious injury on Nova Scotia roads.
