Porta-potty among items cleaned up from shores of Lawlor Island

A porta-potty, a VHS tape, a broken drone and a miniature boxing glove were among the items collected from the shores of Lawlor Island this past weekend.

The 50 hectare island directly across from MacCormacks Beach is an environmental protection zone and usually has no public access, but around 50 volunteers headed over there Sunday to help clean up its beaches.

They were able to collect around 300 bags of garbage and untangle about 20 kilograms of gill net fishing gear from trees and rocks along the shoreline.

“This plastic Ghost Gear Marine Debris doesn’t break down and entangles marine animals and wildlife,” said the Friends of McNabs Island Society — who organized the event.

Other marine debris was also collected, including motor oil containers, lobster bands, bait bags, trap tags, fish crates and 20 lobster traps.

Volunteers also hauled away dozens of tires and many pieces of Styrofoam.

A couple of weeks ago, a cleanup of McNabs Island resulted in 800 bags of trash being removed, including a miniature Sleeping Beauty figurine.
