Rainfall, wind warnings issued in HRM ahead of storm

By Mark Hodgins

Environment Canada has issued weather warnings ahead of what's expected to be a wet and windy start to the week.

The national forecaster has issued a rainfall warning for metro Halifax, and a wind warning is also in place for Halifax east of Porters Lake.

Rainfall warnings are in place across Nova Scotia, while the east sees the biggest risk of high winds.

“A deepening system up the eastern seaboard is going to give us a lot of rain over the next couple of days, 100 to 150 mm,” says CityNews weather specialist John Wilson. “It starts today with showers turning to steadier rain later today, and there's also a lot of wind with this, 40 km/h gusting to 70 km/h.”

Environment Canada's wind warning meantime says areas from Halifax and east along the coast could see gusts up to 100 km/h.

The rain is expected to taper off starting in western Nova Scotia on Tuesday, but the eastern mainland and Cape Breton could see sustained rain as the system is expected to stall.

The provincial Emergency Management Office is asking people to “batten down the hatches”, securing loose objects and having a 72-hour preparedness kit on hand.

In Halifax people are asked to call 311 to report downed trees or flooding.
