Robbery suspect sprayed with own bear spray, arrested by police

By Katie Hartai

A suspect in a Saturday morning robbery involving bear spray, has been arrested by police.

A 17-year-old-male from Dartmouth was located by Halifax Regional Police at around 9:20 p.m. Saturday night.

HRP says it responded to the robbery at Buddy Daye Street and Gerrish Lane around 2:45 a.m. Saturday.

According to officials, a man and woman were walking home when they were approached by two men — one of whom demanded the woman's purse and sprayed her in the face with bear spray.

The male victim was able to grab the bear spray from the suspect and sprayed him with it.

Both of the men involved reportedly took off in an unknown direction.

Officers say they found the purse with all its contents and the can of bear spray nearby.

The single suspect arrested is believed by police to have been the robber to use the spray on the victims. He has been remanded for court and is charged with robbery, weapon offences and breach of charges for recognizance and probation.

Police are still seeking the remaining suspect.
