Veteran New Democrat Dave Wilson is stepping down as the MLA for Sackville Cobequid after 15 years of service.

“I want to thank the residents of Sackville Cobequid for the privilege of being their voice at Province House through five elections,” said Wilson. “This is a wonderful community made up of hardworking people and families and I’ll always cherish the trust they’ve placed in me over the years.”

“My predecessor John Holm always stood up for the needs of his constituents and I’ve tried to do the same. This seat has been held by the NDP for over 30 years and I’m humbled to be part of that legacy,” said Wilson.

A former paramedic, Wilson was first elected in 2003 and served as Minister of Communities, Culture and Heritage, Minister of Health and Minister of Acadian Affairs in the previous NDP government. In opposition, he held numerous critic portfolios including finance and health. Since 2015 he’s also been the NDP’s House Leader.

Wilson’s decision to leave politics will allow him to pursue new professional opportunities and spend more time with his family.

“This has been an incredible journey, but in recent months I’ve been contemplating a life beyond politics,” said Wilson. “Ultimately after 15 years, this is just the right time for me to start a new chapter and allow the people of Sackville Cobequid to elect a new representative.”

“I have all the admiration in the world for all that Dave Wilson has contributed and accomplished in his 15 years as a Member of the Legislative Assembly, and my every best wish is with him as he moves into the next chapter of his life’s work,” said NDP Leader Gary Burrill.

In 2014, Wilson introduced a bill to provide presumptive PTSD coverage to emergency responders in Nova Scotia. In response to his final question in the House of Assembly, the Premier confirmed the province was implementing the policy.

Wilson will meet with the Speaker at 10 am at the Legislature. He and Burrill will be available to speak to media immediately after.
