The ice is finally back at the Scotiabank Centre, which re-opened Friday after closing in July for renovations.
CEO and president Carrie Cussons told NEWS 95.7 that she is “absolutely thrilled.”
“We're back in business, the ice is in, we're ready to go.”
The arena kicked off its opening day with a free skate period, which drew a couple hundred people according to Cussons.
The tender for the $1.4 million renovation and ice installation was picked up by construction company Ellis Don, who did the work on time and on budget, said Cussons.
She attributes this success to all the pre-planning that was done before the project kicked off.
“We knew the importance of being back open for the Mooseheads and making sure that we could do the home opener on a day that made sense for them, so we did a lot of that work,” she said.
The ice replacement was long overdue, explained Cussons, as the slab hadn’t been replaced in 40 years.
The seats, washrooms, roof, and lighting have all been updated as well. Cussons hopes to update the sound and digital system in the future.
“People love coming to Halifax, we just didn't have the right infrastructure to support it, now we do.”
The Scotiabank Centre has an incredibly busy lineup going forward. In addition to the Mooseheads on Saturday, it will also host the Halifax Hurricanes’ home opener in November, and will have shows from Paw Patrol, Trevor Noah, Foreigner, Jack White and more.
Cussons also hinted that there may be more added to that line-up in the coming weeks.
