Shubenacadie Sam predicts early spring

By Andrew Pinsent

There's some optimism heading into the weekend, at least for Maritimers, after the province's furriest forecaster made his 30th annual spring prediction.

Shubenacadie Sam emerged from his lair Friday morning and did not see his shadow, which according to folklore, means an early spring.

A large group looked on as Sam emerged seconds before 8 a.m. Tuesday and wandered around for a short time, a sign that an end to winter is near.

In her inaugural year, the South Shore's prognosticating crustacean agreed with Sam.

Lucy the Lobster crawled from the ocean near the Cape Sable Island Causeway and failed to see her shadow.

Other groundhogs are countering the Nova Scotian forecasters. Both Ontario's Wiarton Willie and Pennsylvania's Punxsutawney Phil saw their shadows, meaning six more weeks of winter.
