Saint Mary's University has announced the new name for their hockey rink and released some initial details about its design.
The Dauphinee Centre will honour a late alumnus and community champion.
The rink, which has a $14.8 million price tag, is slated to open in time for the 2019 varsity season for SMU.
The old arena served as the home for the Huskies for 50 years, and the athletics and recreation director of the university is excited for the new space.
Scott Gray says the rink will house everything from AUS action right down to minor hockey.
“It's a great day for SMU students, current, future and past, but it's also a great day for the Halifax community because it'll be a nice centre for them to watch kids play hockey,” said Gray.
Bob Dauphinee, is a Saint Mary's alumnus who donated $2 million for an arena through his estate.
The Dauphinee Centre will feature an NHL-sized ice surface with seating for 850 fans and a capacity of more than 1,200 people while also being fully-accessible.
