Spring Garden Road pilot project may get a second chance

By CityNews Halifax Staff

A municipal committee wants to resurrect the pilot project banning cars from Spring Garden Road.

A similar plan was attempted this past July but the experiment hit a roadblock less than a week in.

The plan was to stop cars from entering Spring Garden Road between Queen and South Park streets from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Transit buses and cyclists were still allowed.

A group of traffic planners attended a special meeting of Halifax's transportation standing committee yesterday – asking for a new plan.

Mike Connors, manager of transportation planning, detailed what went wrong saying construction and other  “significant challenges” hindered the attempt last time.

He adds new restrictive signage, altering intersection lights and physical measures in the street, like barriers, are being considered.

The transportation standing committe expects to get a report back in February outlining more details with a proposed budget.
