Storm closures and cancellations: Friday, Jan. 20, 2023

With a snowfall warning in effect, here's how the weather is impacting Halifax today.

SCHOOLS: 

All schools are closed in the Halifax Regional Centre for Education. 

Halifax-area CSAP schools are closed. 

NSCC metro campuses are closed, as are many other campuses throughout the province.

Schools are also closed in the Annapolis Valley, South Shore, Tri-County and Chignecto Central regional education centre. 

TRANSPORTATION:

The Halifax Regional Municipality will be enforcing the winter parking ban overnight in both zones (Zone 1 – Central and Zone 2 – Non-Central) between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21.

Halifax Stanfield International Airport recommends passengers confirm their flight status and check road conditions before coming to the airport, and give themselves extra time to get there safely.

Halifax Transit said many routes would be on a snow plan Friday, so delays would be possible.

RECREATION:

Many municipal recreation centres are delaying opening today.

Captain William Spry Public Library will remain closed on Friday, and the Musquodoboit Harbour Public Library and Sheet Harbour Public Library have closed for the day.

The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia has closed early.

The North Hub community centre in Dartmouth has cancelled programs. 

BUSINESSES:

The Halifax branch of East Coast Credit Union will be closing at 1 p.m.

The 2nd SHIFT (NIGHT SHIFT) at all Irving Shipbuilding sites is cancelled with the exception of the identified essential personnel in Facilities and Maintenance. Overtime will continue as planned.

Other businesses may be closed today, or be closing early. It's best to call ahead or check social media/websites before heading out.

EVENTS:

The  Memorial at Saint Mary’s women’s and men’s basketball games (originally scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 21 at 6 and 8 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 22 at 1 and 3 p.m.) have been rescheduled. They will now be played Sunday, Jan. 22 at 6 and 8 p.m. and Monday, Jan.23 at 4 and 6 p.m. 

The  Dalhousie at Acadia women’s volleyball game (originally scheduled for tonight at 7 p.m.) has been rescheduled. It will now be played tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m.

SERVICES:

Feed Nova Scotia's office and warehouse at Wright Ave. are closed for the day, and trucks won't be making deliveries or pick ups.

The Workers' Compensation Board closed its Halifax offices on Friday.

YWCA Halifax Childcare centres are closing at 3p.m. today due to inclement weather

GOVERNMENT: 

CFB Halifax announced Stadacona, HMC Dockyard, Windsor Park and Willow Park are open. 12 Wing Shearwater will operate at minimum staffing/work from home.
