Storm knocks out power to thousands as weather warnings remain in place (update)

It was a wet and windy night in the Halifax area and blustery conditions continue today.
Environment Canada meteorologist Bob Robichaud said some areas of HRM saw more rain than others.
“Coastal areas didn't get quite as much, anywhere in the range of 25, 35 or 40 mm,” he told CityNews Halifax Tuesday morning. “Areas a bit further north and inland got 60-plus, and we got somewhere around 80 in the Hammonds Plains area.”
“In terms of winds, a couple of stations did report gusts of 107 (km/h) and we did get 98 up at the airport.”
As of 9:30 a.m.. a rainfall warning remains in effect. Robichaud explained this is a slow-moving system, in fact it's just reaching Sydney this morning, where up to 150 mm of rain is expected to fall.
“We should see things gradually improve here in the Halifax area today in terms of rain and the strongest winds that we expect with this thing are well east of Halifax, so wind should not be a big issue anymore,” he said.
The temperature is expected to drop throughout the day, and Robichaud said we even might see a few flurries tomorrow.
“There is certainly a chance, at least parts of HRM, where the temperatures could dip below the freezing point and result in some roadways freezing over somewhat,” he said.
“There's also the potential for, on the backside of the system, some of the lingering precipitation may change over to snow and we could actually get a coating of snow during the day tomorrow.”
As of 9:35 a.m. Nova Scotia Power is reporting over 1,000 customers without power in the Halifax area, including an outage in the East Lawrencetown/Seaforth area.
The Halifax Regional Centre for Education says Atlantic View Elementary in Lawrencetown and Marine Drive Elementary in Sheet Harbour don't have power and will be closed.
