Structure fire closes Green Street and part of Barrington (9 photos)

UPDATE: Police sent notification just after midnight to say Green Street has reopened to traffic

Halifax Regional Police have shut down Green Street and a small part of Barrington as emergency crews deal with a fire in the south end.

The Barrington closure is detouring some Halifax Transit buses, as of 6:50 p.m. Monday.

Police say there are no reports of injuries in the blaze at 5280 Green Street — a plaza that houses a U-Haul location — but the windows of a car parked in front of a hydrant were smashed so firefighters could access water to extinguish the flames.

The fire is next door to a retirement residence, and some living there are leaving The Berkeley building, but Cst. Brian Palmeter at the scene tells HalifaxToday.ca no official evacuation has been issued.

A transit bus has been brought in for the seniors.
