Wildfire in Yarmouth County grows, Newfoundland waterbomber called in to help (update)

UPDATE: Nova Scotia's Department of Natural Resources and Renewables says, as of 2:25 p.m. Wednesday, the wildfire is considered out of control and has significantly grown to now cover 3,100 hectares.

A wildfire in Yartmouth County made rapid gains on Tuesday, as the province called in help from Newfoundland and Labrador to fight the flames. 

On Monday when crews first responded to the wildfire near Horseshoe Lake, it was estimated to be about 25 ha. in size. 

At last update Tuesday night, the the department of Natural Resources and Renewables says it now covers 1,000 ha.

Provincial fire crews and two helicopters have been working the fire, and late Tuesday they got a helping hand. 

The Newfoundland government sending a CL-415 waterbomber to assist after a request from Nova Scotia. 

The department says ground crews were pulled out late Tuesday to allow the waterbomber to douse the fire. 

Air quality is a concern in the Yarmouth area. Environment Canada has issued a statement, warning smoke could significantly impact air in communities near the fire.

An update on the fire is expected Wednesday morning.
