Halifax Police respond to ‘incident’ in South End, power turned off for thousands

By CityNews Halifax Staff

An incident in the south end of Halifax on Monday night left thousands without power, but police are not offering many details on what happened.

Police have only said that officers were called to the Harbourview Dr. area — near Tower Road and Young Avenue — at 5:41 p.m.

Due the an ongoing situation, emergency officials requested Nova Scotia Power shut off power to the area.

The resulting outage, at its peak, affected nearly 20,000 customers.

Roads in the area were also shut down. Police sent out a news release asking the public to stay away, stating there was no risk to public safety.

Police say the lack of information is due to the nature of the call.

“We understand that our approach may have created some frustration for the media, however, we have an obligation to protect the privacy of the individual in this highly sensitive and private situation,” said Cst. John MacLeod in an emailed statement Tuesday morning.
