Man with ‘a number of weapons’ arrested near planned demonstration

A man Halifax Regional Police say had a “number of weapons” in downtown Halifax is facing multiple charges.

Officers were in the Barrington Street area near Grand Parade for a planned demonstration early Saturday afternoon when they located the man.

The suspect was arrested after a brief struggle.

Police say they seized an axe, sensory irritant, brass knuckles and a collapsible baton.

The 44-year-old will appear in court at a later date on charges of assaulting a peace officer, possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace, carrying a weapon while at a public meeting, mischief and two counts of resisting arrest.
