Halifax Regional Police (HRP) is warning people of what it's calling an “anticipated event involving vehicles” on Sunday.
“We are monitoring the situation closely and officers will respond accordingly,” a news release says.
Freedom Nova Scotia, a group “uniting the freedom community” in the province, according to its Facebook page, is organizing a Halifax convoy event that's set for 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Feb. 6.
According to an event page, organizers are asking demonstrators to decorate their vehicles and use their horns to “wake our city up” as they follow a set loop around the city.
Demonstrators aim to start at the Pier 21 parking lot at 1055 Marginal Rd., travel north up Barrington Street, drive back south down Robie Street, travel down Quinpool Road and then head up Highway 102 toward Bayers Lake.
Organizers plan to do the loop at least twice.
They are asking demonstrators to obey all traffic laws, stay in a one-lane formation and allow other vehicles to merge in and out of the convoy, as needed.
“Police remind organizers, attendees and members of the public to follow COVID-19 emergency as well as Motor Vehicle Act requirements,” HRP says in its news release.
On Feb. 4, Nova Scotia issued a directive under the Emergency Management Act that prohibits protesters from blockading or disrupting traffic on any road, street or highway in Nova Scotia.
Anyone who fails to comply with the directive risks being issued a fine ranging between $3,000 and $10,000. Corporations that fail to comply risk a fine in the range of $20,000 and $100,000.
