Woman airlifted to hospital after train and vehicle collide in Oakfield

Emergency crews are in Oakfield responding to a collision between a vehicle and a train.

RCMP tell HalifaxToday.ca two people were in the vehicle when the collision happened at around 11:45 a.m. Monday where the tracks cross North Fork Rd.

Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency assistant chief Corey Beals says when crews arrived, a woman was trapped in the vehicle and they removed her through a sunroof.

“The vehicle was on its side in a precarious position on the embankment, but our crews are skillful and they used their skills to successfully extricate her from the vehicle,” he explains.

“It's always a challenge when the vehicle isn't on its 4 wheels so we always have to take into consideration the stabilization of the vehicle.”

Beals has no details on the woman's injuries, but says she was airlifted to hospital in a LifeFlight helicopter.

He describes the second person as a “young patient,” adding “her injuries appeared to be minor in nature.”

Beals says the rail crossing at that location does not have safety arms or lights.

“Drivers, when they come to that rail approach, they would have to come to a stop and look both ways as they proceed across the tracks,” Beals says. “That's the only safety measure that's at that track.”

According to RCMP Cpl. Jennifer Clarke, CN police will be leading the investigation into what happened.
