Two charged in several break and enters and thefts of mail

Two men have been taken into custody after a rash of break-ins and thefts of mail throughout the Halifax peninsula.

Just after midnight Tuesday, Halifax Regional Police were called to South Street after someone spotted two men breaking into the parkade of a building.

The suspects were gone by the time officers arrived.

HRP had already been investigating several break-ins and thefts of mail with similar circumstances and suspect descriptions.

At 3 a.m., officers on Young Street spotted two men who matched the description of the parkade break-in.

Both were arrested and police say they seized mail they believe had been stolen.

Adam David Sarty, 36, was scheduled to appear today in Halifax Provincial Court to face charges of:

  • Break and enter with intent (two counts)
  • Theft of mail
  • Possession of break tools
  • Carrying a concealed weapon
  • Possession of stolen property (27 counts)
  • Failing to appear for court 

James Edward Carey, 38, was scheduled to appear today in Halifax Provincial Court to face charges of:

  • Break and enter with intent (four counts)
  • Theft of mail (three counts)
  • Possession of break tools (five counts)
  • Possession of stolen property (14 counts)
  • Break and enter to commit theft (two counts)
  • Attempted theft of mail
