Two facing criminal charges related to violent Dalhousie homecoming party

Two young men are facing criminal charges in the investigation into a violent street party in the city's south end earlier this fall.

Between 3,000 and 4,000 people gathered on October 1 in the area of Larch, Preston and Jennings streets for the unsanctioned Dalhousie University homecoming bash.

Halifax Regional Police say officers were on scene throughout the gathering, some of which were punched, kicked, spit on and hit with projectiles.

Now two men have been arrested.

Jordan Samuel Oszlak, 19, will face three counts of assaulting a police officer and one count each of assaulting a police officer with a weapon and resisting arrest.

Luke Lockhart Slipp, 19, will face two counts of assaulting a police officer and one count each of causing a disturbance and resisting arrest.

HRP are still investigating a stabbing that took place at the party. They've said officers had to take the 19-year-old male victim to hospital in a police cruiser because paramedics couldn't reach the area.

Anyone with information or video of the incident who hasn't yet spoken with police is asked to call 902-490-5020 or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers.

Officers wrote a total of 122 tickets related to the event, 112 for Liquor Control Act violations and ten for noise by-law violations.    

Another four people were arrested for public intoxication.

Police say the party caused “significant safety hazards” and put a big strain on police and first responder resources.

In addition to the stabbing, there were fights, fireworks were set off — some directed at homes in the area — and a fire was set in the street using downed branches from Hurricane Fiona.

“Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency and Emergency Health Services were not able to enter the area due to the crowds and safety concerns,” police said.

“Officers were required to put out the fire and bring a number of injured people out of the area to paramedics for treatment.”
