Local clinical research company at forefront of Alzheimer’s studies

By Mathew Lajoie

Important, cutting edge clinical trial research related to Alzheimer’s disease and dementia is happening right here in Nova Scotia. Since 2006, True North Clinical Research has been actively working toward better treatments for people with dementia, including Alzheimer’s Disease. With the help of local Alzheimer’s patients, their discoveries are contributing to research that has the potential to improve the lives of people around the world.

Alzheimer’s Disease Touches Every Community

Alzheimer’s Disease is the most common type of dementia. It is a progressive brain disease that impacts all facets of a person’s life. Alzheimer’s Disease not only affects the people diagnosed with it, but it also greatly impacts the lives of their loved ones.

In 2015, at least 46.8 million people around the world had dementia. That number is expected to rise to more than 130 million worldwide by 2050.

Clinical Trial Research Helps Future Generations

True North Clinical Research holds an essential role in pharmaceutical research related to Alzheimer’s Disease. Their clinical trial research is an important step in the process of developing new pharmaceutical drugs to treat and potentially cure the disease. New medications must be tested thoroughly on human volunteers to prove that they are safe and have a positive impact on the health of a patient.

People who volunteer for clinical trial research benefit from new medications, free of charge,  they would otherwise not have access to. They are constantly monitored by highly trained professionals to ensure their safety.

Clinical trial volunteers are also an integral part of scientific discovery. They are helping researchers improve treatments for future generations. Without clinical trial volunteers, new treatments and therapies would not reach the general public.

Getting Involved

True North Clinical Research is actively seeking Alzheimer’s patients to participate in upcoming clinical trials. Each potential volunteer patient must meet eligibility criteria before being approved for participation. They also commit to attending appointments so their progress can be carefully tracked. Volunteers work with highly trained clinical staff and researchers throughout the process.

“The greatest challenge for us is spreading the word about the research that is available to the population of Nova Scotia,” says Nicole Blanchard, Director of Operations for True North Clinical Research. “We want all Nova Scotians to know that if they are experiencing memory problems, they have options and can choose to participate in clinical research trials.”

“We have two clinical research studies that are currently looking for participants, and at least eight more that we will be recruiting for in 2021. Each research study is a little different: some involve oral medications, some require a participant to have IV infusions, and some involve a device that a person might wear at home. There are a variety of opportunities for anyone to get involved if they want to,” she says.

True North Clinical Research has convenient clinic locations in New Minas and Halifax. To learn more about True North Clinical Research’s current and future trials, visit their website at truenorthcr.com or call 1-855-378-8783 to speak to a highly trained staff member.
