Turkeys head out to 900 tables in Halifax

The Parker Street Food Bank was busy handing out 900 turkey dinner hampers for the 17th year in a row Thursday.
Approximately 300 turkey dinner hampers were delivered to seniors and shut-ins yesterday and another 500 were ready to go today.
The Halifax Rainmen and volunteers from the Bedford Institute of Oceanography were on hand to help out.
Jack Cruickshank of The Turkey Club Society presented the food bank with a cheque for $25,000. He says the decision to donate was easy.
“We thought ‘oh my’ if we could just help some of these people at christmas-time,” says Cruickshank.
Mel Boutilier, Executive Director of Parker Street Food Bank says the number of people who require his help has increased over seventeen years of service.
” (They) can’t pay their light bills, and they can’t pay their rent, and they can’t put oil in the tank and their houses are cold,” says Boutilier.
“So were dealing with that …trying to raise money as best we can, to help as many people get through the difficult times.”
Susan Gabriel has volunteered at the foodbank in the past but says her low-income job has placed her in the waiting line for a dinner parcel. She’s thankful for the food.
“Very grateful because you get all the dressings that go wtih it so you don’t need to want for anything you get right down to your dessert.”
