The Halifax Regional School Board is taking another look at its snow day policy.
Board member Gin Yee tells the Chronicle-Herald closing schools because of weather remains a hot-button issue with many parents.
In a school board website video superintendent Carole Olsen says currently, a team including board staff and bus drivers start at 4:30 in the morning to make the call.
“They test road conditions, check webcams, read local weather reports and identify when roads will be plowed, sanded, or salted.” the superintendent said.
School boards in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta rarely close schools because of weather.
They may shut down bus service because of frigid temperatures, but
keep schools open and parents often take their children to school themselves.
The Halifax board’s review takes place Jan 6.
