Mooseheads lose 10-1 on home ice

After nine days off, the Halifax Mooseheads seemed to want to hold onto Christmas vacation a little longer Sunday.
The Moncton Wildcats handed the Mooseheads a 10-1 pummeling at the Metro Centre.
“When the first couple goals went in our shoulders went down and we stopped playing,” said head coach Cam Russell.
The team was without several players due to injuries, missed flights due to weather and international tournaments, however Russell didn’t offer that as a mistake.
“We’re definitely capable of more… mistakes that shouldn’t have happened,” says Russell.
The Wildcats set the tone for the game early when newly acquired Nicolas Deschamps got his first goal as a Moncton Wildcat just 19 seconds into the game.
Shots on goal were lopsided 23-7 in the first period, leaving goaltender Mathieu Corbeil to take a seat on the bench to start the second period.
“I was unhappy with everyone all around, they had a lot of quality scoring chances and he was sort of left out to hang,” says Russell.
Rookie Joel Grondin faced a 5-0 Wildcat lead when he took over in the crease, and he wouldn’t fare much better.
The Mooseheads were buzzing for a chunk of the second period after Gerrad Grant netted a penalty shot, sliding it low on Moncton’s newly
returned 20-year-old goaltender Nicola Riopel.
However Deschamps would add his second of the game and the floodgates would re-open. Daniel Pettersson would also net a pair and add two assists, with the rest of the scoring coming from six different sources.
The Mooseheads play next in a home-and-home series with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles Tuesday and Wednesday.
