Getting home after the party

On New Year’s Eve, it’s time to finalize plans for partying and the after party plan – either getting home safely or finding a place to stay the night.
About 90 per cent of the people we surveyed said they had plans for tonight, whether it was having people over, visiting with friends or going downtown; and everyone had a plan for after the party. A few people said they were planning to get a hotel room within walking distance of their party, others said they plan to stay over at a friend’s house.
If you are planning to go home, Metro Transit is offering a free, extended service tonight only, with the last buses and ferries leaving at 1:45 a.m. The service applies to its conventional bus, Access-A-Bus, Community Transit and Alderney ferry services.
If you’re relying on a drive, Halifax Regional Police spokesperson Theresa Rath reminds residents Operation Christmas will be in full force tonight. Vehicle checkpoints will dot the municipality as officers separate the drunk drivers from the designated drivers.
“Most importantly we encourage people to drink responsibly and if you drink, do not drive,” Rath told News 95.7.
Calling a cab is also an option. Karen Herman with Casino Taxi said drivers will be working to get people home, but it’s tough to know how many cabs will be on the road, or how long customers may wait.
“A cab can pick up a drive which may take him to Musquodoboit Habour and he’s out of the loop for maybe 45 minutes to an hour,” explained Herman. “My advice to anyone who’s going to go out and party on New Year’s Eve is to make sure they have a Plan B.”
If walking is your option, the weather forecast will be minus four degrees overnight with clouds and light flurries.
