Suspect arraigned in murdered cabbie case

A man charged with the death of a Dartmouth taxi driver was arraigned on murder charges Friday morning and also faces a list of other serious offenses.

Police arrested 20-year-old Chaze Lamar Thompson yesterday in connection with the January 2009 murder of Sergei Kostin.

He was also arraigned on three charges of assault stemming from a February 2008 stabbing incident.

“The crown opposed his release on the aggravated assault information, so if he wished to get his release on that there will have to be a bail hearing,” says Crown Attorney Greg Lenehan.

“He is automatically remanded on the murder matter he can only seek his bail in Supreme Court.”

A woman believed to part of Thompson’s family broke down crying outside the courtroom after Thompson was arraigned on first degree murder Friday morning.

Thompson has been in custody at the Burnside jail for a robbery at a Portland Street video store from February 2009.

He’s due back in court this February on both matters.
