Bathurst marks anniversary of deadly van crash

BATHURST, NB – Today marks a sombre anniversary in Bathurst.
It was two years ago today that eight lives were cut short in a devastating crash on a stretch of highway just outside the city.
The deadly head-on collision claimed the lives of seven members of the Bathurst High School boys basketball team and Beth Lord, the wife of the team’s coach.
Bathurst Mayor Stephen Brunet says two years has passed by very quickly and there is still a lot of grief in his community.
Unlike last year, when a special mass was held, today is a day of quiet remembrance.
Brunet says he will be laying flowers today on behalf of the city, a special commemorative banner is hanging at City Hall and the lights on an observation tower have been colored red.
Brunet says the city is currently working on a monument to honour the victims and he hopes it will be completed by this time next year.
Students and staff at Bathurst High marked today’s date by observing a moment of silence and the laying of a wreath at the school’s “Boys in Red” monument.
