Councillors promise better attendance in 2010

Some regional councillors aren’t happy with media coverage of their absenteeism at public meetings – but they’re promising to do better.
A Jan. 9 Chronicle Herald article stated Gloria McCluskey had missed eight meetings in 2009 – but she says it was only four.
McCluskey told council on Tuesday night she missed those meetings because she was taking care of other duties.
“This job is not all about council meetings,” “It’s also about all the emails and phone calls, it’s about meetings and residents and boards and committees.”
She read a long list of committees and boards she’s active on as part of her duties as council.
Coun. Steve Streatch also voiced his concerns over a reported 16 meetings – when he too says he only missed four.
“Your worship, to suggest there is a direct link between general attendance and effectiveness in our district is unfair and, I think, uninformed,” he said. “For 11 years I have done my best to represent the rural residents that have re-elected me as their councillor and to speak up on their behalf.”
Despite their ire, both councillors promised to try and improve their attendance in 2010.
