Delicate chunk of land on South Shore protected

A $4.5 million deal between the Nature Conservancy of Canada and JD Irving means nearly 1500 hectares of ecologically sensitive land will be conserved.
The land was purchased from JD Irving at a “bargain price” below its appraised value.
Conservancy regional vice-president Linda Stephenson says her group bought what it could afford.
“There are other lands within the area of those that we’ve acquired that we’d like to have in an ideal world and we may have an opportunity to go back and get more,”
“But we picked those that had the most critical habitat for the Atlantic Coastal Plain Flora.”
The package includes forests, lakes, wetlands and shoreline located in what is known as the Atlantic Coastal Plain in Shelburne and Yarmouth counties.
